Biofeedback is tool by which one learns how to modify the mind or body by observing real-time performance on the body function of interest. Think about your car. What if it had no speedometer? It would be difficult to tell if you were going too fast and putting yourself at risk of accident. You also may not be going fast enough and miss out on quality time at home. So it is with all our bodily processes. Fortunately, or body is well-adapted to regulate most functions for survival, but it is not adapted to our fast-paced world. Thus some of the functions are not optimized. Biofeedback provides an opportunity for this optimization. Most of the biofeedback methods work by enhancing the body’s Relaxation Response (as opposed to the Stress Response which is often chronically activated). One of the great things about biofeedback is that almost anyone can do it regardless of age or developmental ability. There is nothing to consciously learn as it is an intuitive process, like riding a bike. We make it fun.
